Mike Schmitz knows what it takes to help individuals, families and businesses succeed. As a leader in business and the community, he’s ready to put his experience to work as Mayor and Make Bismarck Better.

A lifelong North Dakotan, Mike has built his family and career here in Bismarck. He was raised here, educated here, and built a business here. After graduating from the University of Mary in 1984, Mike began his career in a local accounting firm.

He would go on to lead growing financial teams across several private sector organizations. Then in 2003 with grit and determination, Mike took a risk and launched his own firm. Today, Schmitz-Holmstrom CPAs is a successful business proudly employing 30+ professionals.

An entrepreneur, Mike has dedicated himself to building a successful business. His clients come from all walks of life and every day they trust Mike for advice on their most personal financial decisions. With gratitude for the community of Bismarck, Mike generously volunteers his time to serve the organizations who have inspired his success.

Mike knows what it takes to build a budget that funds our priorities, reduces spending, and keeps a check on revenues because he’s been in business for nearly forty years. As mayor, he will bring this same conservative approach to Bismarck. As a political outsider, Mike is ready to fight politics-as-usual. He believes it is time for new ideas and a fresh perspective to improve decision making and drive value for our taxpayers.

Mike and his wife, Janel, have been married for 37 years. They have two adult sons, Jason and David (DJ), and a new daughter-in-law Kate. David and Kate were married in August 2021.
